The Mountain is You, Part 3

I know this is the third Sunday I’m talking about the same book, but the way Brianna Wiest has written her book, The Mountain is You, made me slow down my rhythm. Maybe it’s because her questions regarding personal growth are too good to rush through. Maybe it’s because of my own self-sabotage and feeling overwhelmed. 

From Brianna’s perspective, self-sabotage is when you have two conflicting desires, and while you know how to move forward, you are for some reason stuck. 

To give you an example: ‘perfectionism’ isn’t a good thing, as it sets up unrealistic expectations about our abilities or unreachable outcomes. Basically it is a self created concept which holds us back from showing up and trying. All of this is because we are afraid of failing, feeling not enough, or vulnerable.

The solution?

First comes acknowledgment of what’s happening and second comes the willingness to do it anyway and sticking to it, whatever that might be (door knocking, cold calling, anything).

Other forms of self-sabotage can include: 

Uprooting: starting new projects without finishing old ones

Justification: buying into your own excuses

Being ‘busy’: the ultimate way to distract yourself from what is really important

Unhealthy habits: this is the most common self-sabotage

Fear of failing: inevitable, but how else do we move forward?

You get the idea. There are hundreds of ways we can hinder our own growth. Brianna brings many of them up and helps you to not only understand them, but also offers a solution on how to go past them. 

Here are some thought-provoking questions inspired by her book:

  • What are my limiting beliefs or fears that hold me back from reaching my full potential?
  • What self-sabotaging patterns do I engage in, and what triggers these behaviors?
  • How can I cultivate self-compassion and kindness towards myself, especially in moments of struggle or failure?
  • In what ways do I resist change or growth, and how can I embrace uncertainty as an opportunity?
  • What steps can I take to break free from my comfort zone and pursue my dreams?

Self-reflection is hard as we need to be honest and BS free. If you’ll be brave enough, you’ll find diamonds in the making. You’ll find your future self. And that my dear friends is the best gift you can give yourself.
